WHAT ROSALIND IS UP TO

THE ETRUSCAN PHENOMENA

From Italian soil, they arose from the dead after more than two thousand, six hundred years, during the Renaissance when land was needed to grow crops for an expanding population. At first, a few artifacts, sculptures and tombs surfaced. One unusual object was a bronze candelabra that lay in a ditch by the side of a dirt road. As shrubs were torn down and rocks shoved out of the way for growth, hidden tombs with markers came to light. By the 18th century, the birth of tourism started when trains were invented and folks came from England looking for a warmer climate. They invaded Italy's cities, intriguing hills, valleys and coasts. Some who walked the land became interested in the ancient, delightful Etruscan society. Theses scholars pieced together the fascinating history of the dead culture and wrote books we still rely on today.

From tombs, architectural stones and landscape, some Etruscan artifacts were so exquisite, remarkable or downright odd, that museums were created to house them. Here, visitors flock to admire sarcophagi, sculptures, jewelry, paintings, and their uncommon bronze utensils of everyday life. Today's curators--caretakers of these museums--have degrees in classical archeology, or art history, and continue to put the puzzle together. They are story tellers of these phenomenal people.

And then there's me, an academic with imagination. I'm the Muse for the Etruscans, contemplating their mysterious world.

The Etruscans feel alive to me! May you read my Historical Fiction and let the Etruscan spirit also shine on you.
